More About Hoxton
Along with neighbouring Shoreditch, Hoxton enjoys a reputation as one of London's creative and fashionable nerve centres. Its unique and curious atmosphere sees arty, loft-dwelling types residing alongside poorer council house residents.

The Eclectic History of Hoxton

This has long been the case, as Hoxton's position outside the jurisdiction of the City in Tudor times saw several inns and bordellos set up home there, which were popular with all corners of society.

One of the most notorious letters in English history was posted to an address in Hoxton. The anonymous note, sent to Lord Monteagle warning him about the impending Gunpowder Plot in 1605, led to the capture and gruesome execution of many of the conspirators.

The area was also famous for its lunatic asylums, the largest of which, Hoxton House, only closed in 1902. These days the area remains a bit different from the rest of London, with its quirky bars and fashionable Hoxton hotels a big draw for many London residents and visitors.

Galleries and Museums

For such a creative corner of London, it should come as no surprise that one of Hoxton's big draws is the high number of art galleries around, showcasing various styles in some very interesting spaces.

Of these, perhaps the best are found around the edge of attractive Hoxton Square, which is as much Shoreditch as it is Hoxton itself. In particular, White Cube is a contemporary art exhibition hall that was opened in 2000 as a smaller second gallery to the first site in Bermondsey. It houses 2,000 square feet of space, all of which is stylishly populated by some thought-provoking, original modern artwork. There are plenty more dotted throughout the area, in truth you will be unlikely to go too far in Hoxton without walking past a gallery.

Elsewhere, the Geffrye Museum is a truly fascinating look at how English houses have been decorated from the 1600s to the present day. Focusing primarily on middle class houses, the museum recreates rooms from different historical periods using furniture, fabrics, art and decorations of the time, allowing visitors to see the progression over time. The Geffrye Museum also boasts attractive gardens surrounding the main building.

Getting to Hoxton

There are several ways to travel in and out of Hoxton, the best being the London Overground. This is the only rail service with a station called Hoxton, and will therefore get you closest to the heart of the area. However, Old Street station on the Northern Line of the London Underground is just down the road from Hoxton Square, and is ideal for accessing the City or the South Bank, while you can also go two stops to Kings Cross and change for one of five other tube lines.

If you want to get in and out of the city centre, you can always take the bus. Number 242 will stop at Tottenham Court Road, right at the end of Oxford Street. Visit the London Eye by getting off at Waterloo on number 243, or you could even head east towards Greenwich on the number 47.

Hotels in Hoxton

There are plenty of hotels within easy reach of Hoxton, especially if you head into neighbouring Shoreditch or towards the nearby Barbican Centre. Perhaps the best of the bunch is RE Hotel London Shoreditch, one of our intriguing eco-friendly hotels. Thistle City Barbican is a more traditional option which boasts all the facilities and amenities you could wish for, while Tommy Miahs Raj Hotel is an Indian-themed establishment that offers something delightfully different - in particular their wonderful tea room and bar.

Pubs and Bars in Hoxton

In an area as trendy as Hoxton, you would expect there to be a number of interesting bars, and indeed there are. Hoxton Square is once again the focal point for the best of the action, which is to be expected as it is quite a competitive area where only those establishments who can gain a decent reputation quickly will survive.

Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen is right on the corner of the square, and boasts a fine selection of international beers, both bottled and draught, while their cocktail selection is well thought out and very tempting. It is also right next door to The White Cube, so combining the two would be ideal.

However, some would contend that the best cocktails on the square can be found at Trafik, where the menu is very highly rated indeed. Of course, you can't come to East London without experiencing a decent East End pub, and The Griffin manages to combine the spirit of tradition with the modernity you would expect of Hoxton.

Restaurants in Hoxton

When it comes to restaurants, it would be pointless to come to this area and seek out food you could get anywhere. Red Dog Saloon is one of the most popular eateries with the locals, with its American menu containing traditional US fare such as baby back ribs and pulled pork sandwiches. The atmosphere is truly authentic, with the dining area housed in an attractive wood cabin, and meat cooked using a specially imported barbecue smoker.

The Hoxton/Shoreditch area is widely acknowledged as the best place to find Vietnamese food in London, and perhaps the best option for this is Que Viet, which boasts a massive menu with plenty of choice, and yet despite its glowing reputation its prices are perfectly manageable. Bogayo is a lovely setting for delicious Moroccan fare with a European twist.

Parking in Hoxton

There are a couple of NCP car parks conveniently located within a short distance of Hoxton Square. You are looking at a ten-minute walk into central Hoxton once you have left your car at either Clifton Street (EC2A 4JH) or Great Eastern Street (EC2A 3ER), but this is perfectly pleasant. Prices range from £10 to £18 a day, and both car parks are open 24 hours a day.
